Amalgam is a commonly used filling material that contains an amalgamation of mercury and various other metals including zinc, silver and copper.

At The Smart Clinics our experience has told us that the majority of our patients are in favour of amalgam free, tooth coloured fillings. Advances in dentistry have led to improved alternative materials to amalgam, resulting in a more natural smile.

Safety is our main concern when conducting dental amalgam removal. We want, at all times, to keep the exposure to amalgam to a minimum. Therefore we follow a strict protocol.

After amalgam removal we place a white filling, porcelain inlay or crown. This will be discussed with you during the initial consultation.

A dental bridge essentially bridges a gap in your mouth to replace missing teeth.

They can be fixed or removable. Fixed is generlaly teh better solution, but our dentists offer both adn can advise accordingly.

At The Smart Clinics, we know the importance of looking after your children’s teeth from an early age. Diet, oral hygiene and visits to the dentist are all important in helping to care for a child’s teeth. Take your child to the dentist when they are as young as possible and at least once by the time they are two. This is so that they become familiar with the environment and get to know the dentist. This also means that any health problems can be identified from an early age.

All our dentists are well trained in dealing with children, and the facilities we have at The Smart Clinics make the experience one your child will look forward to. This includes DVD players with their own headphones, toys and books. We are committed to providing a friendly, welcoming environment where children feel safe and relaxed. There is no reason to be afraid of going to the dentist but all too often we meet people who have had a bad experience in childhood and this affects them for the rest of their lives. At The Smart Clinics we do not believe in forcing children to do anything that they don’t want to do and we always aim to keep any treatment pain-free and pleasant.

A good dental experience as a child will allow for a long lasting and positive approach to dental care.

We provide free dental check-ups for all children under the age of 5. After school appointments are available for your convenience.

Composite bonding involves the artistic use of highly aesthetic white filling materials to change the shape and sometimes shade of teeth.

Cosmetic bonding can repair chips, rebuild worn teeth, close gaps and cover discoloration. It’s best used for less drastic changes but small changes often make a huge difference!

A dental implant is a long term solution to tooth loss and restoring a natural, healthy-looking smile.

The implant itself is a titanium screw which is permanently fitted into your jawbone, replacing your missing tooth root.

Once the bone surrounding your implant has fused to the implant, it will be firmly held in place.

A crown is a single false tooth which is fitted over the tooth to cover it and to restore the shape, size, function, and appearance.

If the existing tooth is insufficient, then a crown may be fitted onto a dental implant.

It can be a very worrying time when things go wrong with your teeth. Our dentists offer emergency dental treatments with high standards of work.

The team’s expertise and advanced on-site equipment means that we can help with a range of difficulties; providing rapid diagnosis and effective treatment plans.

Emergency dentistry on the NHS can be limited and not all private practices offer it. In fact, very few offer the advanced services available at The Smart Clinics. We welcome non-members as well as members and this is often the case for emergency dentistry where clients simply can’t get into their regular providers quickly enough. In fact, many then choose to transfer to The Smart Clinics, but there’s no pressure – it’s up to you.

The humble filling is one of the most common dentistry procedures. Over 4/5 of the UK population have at least 1 filling and the average is 7.

At The Smart Clinics, we offer the highest quality fillings available for private patients. Our expert dentists offer colour-matched fillings that are attractive as well as durable.

Composite fillings are generally not available on the NHS unless you have a cavity on your front teeth. However, we understand that many patients would prefer these for cosmetic reasons, as a good white filling is very difficult to detect in every day life.

Our dentists are happy to discuss the merits of all options, based on inspection and diagnosis.

Gum disease (also known as gingivitis) and periodontitis, which can follow a case of gum disease, are two conditions that affect the teeth and gums.

The symptoms of gum disease are typically red and inflamed or swollen gums, or gums that bleed when you brush your teeth. Most people have at least one case of mild gum disease during their lifetime. In the UK, it is estimated that 50-90% of the adult population has some degree of gum disease.

Although gum disease is exceptionally common, there are things you can do to improve or even prevent problems occurring. At The Smart Clinics, we are proactive about good gum health and offer a wide range of gum treatments to tackle inflamed or bleeding gums. Regular consultations, scale and polishes, and an excellent oral health routine can all help your gums to heal. If you have moderate to severe gum disease, you may need several visits but it is important to get the problem under control in order to prevent future tooth loss.

It is very common for patients to have worries and concerns about visiting the dentist. For some people, their fears become a dental phobia that can interfere with or even prevent them from getting the care and treatment they need.

The Smart Clinics dental team have lots of experience of treating nervous patients and can help you with your dental phobia by talking through your worries and explaining every aspect of your treatment. Hopefully, with time and patience, we can help you rationalise your fears.

You are very welcome to bring someone with you for moral support during your treatment. You can also bring in your own choice of music and arrange your appointment for early in the morning, so you don’t have to spend the whole day worrying.

In our experience, knowledge is power. The dentist will explain every stage of the treatment so that you understand exactly what is happening at all times. Noises, equipment and materials will be explained in advance, so you know what to expect, when and why.

Underneath the protective enamel coat of the tooth is the pulp containing nerves and blood vessels. Through decay or injury the pulp can become damaged and infected. Once the pulp is infected, the options for treatment are either root canal treatment or extraction.

Root canal treatment is a procedure that can save the tooth by removing the infection, cleaning out the canal and filling it to prevent further infection. This requires time but it is done under local anaesthetic and is no more painful than having an ordinary filling. When done well, and with the aid of some of the latest technology, root canal treatment has high success rates and more predictable results than some older treatment methods. It is a procedure that can be performed without any discomfort and indeed our patients have been occasionally known to have a little snooze during treatment!
